Who feels the ever present “need for speed”? I would venture that in today’s society, everyone has felt the pressure to work faster in every area of his or her life; to drive faster, to run faster, to finish that looming report faster. But how can we move any faster if that big lump of a machine sitting in front of us as we work is crawling along at the slowest pace known to man?! I seriously have wondered if at times, my computer might actually be moving slower than the first computer ever made. It’s like sitting in a Ferrari and going the speed limit. You know that beautiful piece of machinery was made for so much more than what you are using it for. The problem is, I cannot afford a Ferrari. Or even a new computer, for that matter. Most people are running Windows XP on their home computer, which was the fancy new operating system when it came out. It was a huge upgrade from previous operating systems, but it was a downgrade in speed because of all its fancy bells and whistles. Now, we have Windows Vista, which has even MORE appeal. Both are nice in their respects, but both can also slow down a computer like nobody’s business! When you pair a slow operating system with everyday use, you are left with a machine that needs a serious oil change.

My co-worker and I were talking the other day about computer performance and I realized we see a common problem most tech's or users never even consider... With that said please enjoy the following post I asked him to put together!

Thoughts on Dust

Though it may seem a strange issue or topic to write about, or even read for that matter, dust can lead to the untimely demise of your computer system. Dust, in and of itself, is relatively harmless except when the maid with the bright white glove shows up and swipes her finger across the counter, all the while glaring at you over her glasses with a look of deep disappointment and disapproval (but I’m not bitter).
Computers and electronics do not like dust. They are arch-enemies, and do not wish to have anything to do with one another. According to legend, a dispute broke out in the late 1970‘s, after the first personal computer was available, which resulted in dust vowing to eternally plague the PC with it’s subtle yet potentially fatal presence. Their plan of attack is to slowly infiltrate and begin the reign of terror. Their chief weapon: The Dust Bunny.

Most people dust their home furnishings regularly for aesthetic reasons, but what they don’t know is that in the quiet corners behind the desk, dust is launching a full scale attack or their home computer. Gradually the dust builds up inside the system and sticks to the hard drive, as well as attaches itself to the cooling system on the main processor chip. At first the computer ignores the dust because, let’s face it, the computer is bigger and stronger and has fans that take care of the it. After awhile the computer can’t breath like it used to, but it still keeps on truckin’. In a year or two it starts to get tired; the fans can’t spin as fast while the cooling system on the chip is weighed down by the looming blanket of insulation.

With it’s new winter coat, the computer is nice and warm. Which is all well and good, except for the fact that computers don’t like to be warm. As the dust layer increases in size, the temperature rises, the air flow slows, and the computer is now struggling to catch it’s breath. Just when victory is within dust’s grasp, the side panel is thrown open and in one fell swoop (sometimes two) the dust is eradicated and blown away into the wind.

This may be a quirky little anecdote but the moral of the story is true. Dust can build up faster than you think in all environments. Whether the system is located in a carpenter’s workshop, a cabinet under the desk, or the corner it shares with your cats, we treat all of our patients (the computers) equally and give them the respect they deserve by removing the dust build up from every desktop system that passes though our shop.
